Edwin Porter

Terrible Teddy, the Grizzly King
Porter was born and raised in Pennsylvania. He developed an interest in electricity at a young age. Edwin Porter was a film pioneer in the early 1900's. Porter entered the motion picture work in 1896 when movies were projected on large screens. He adventured through the West Indies and South America with a projector scope to show films at fair grounds and open fields. Soon afterward he took charge of motion picture production at Edision New York studios. His job consumed of operating the camera, directing the actors, and assembling the final print. During the next decade Porter became the most influential filmmaker in the United States. Apparently from Porters experience he was able to know exactly how to please the crowd. Porter began making trick-films and comedies. One of Edwin Porters earliest films was called Terrible Teddy, the Grizzly King. Instead of using abrupt splices or cuts between shots, however, Porter created dissolves, gradual transitions from one image to another. One of Edwin's most popular films was called The Great Train Robbery, Porter took the American Western story already popular to many audiences and made it an entirely new visual experience. It was a one-reel film that ran for twelve minutes and it composed of twenty different shot.
The Great Train Robbery toured for several years throughout the United States and it's success led towards establishing motion pictures for commercial entertainment. Porters director skills kept him in pace with the changes in motion art. He created a 3D anagylph movie. The year before he had shown a short 3D film of Niagra Falls in 1915. Porter was known for rarely repeating an innovation. He diead at age 71 in 1941in New York City.

3 Photographs that changed the world

This photograph was taken of Kim Phuc in 1972 during a napalm attack in South Vietnam. In this photograph it shows five children running away from a terrible accidental napalm attack. This photo was published worldwide after being taken to show the world the cruel injustice of the Vietnam War. The pictures displaying the Vietnam War had a very large impact at home and causing anti-war protests, world-wide peace campaign and contributions to ending the war. This photo really shows the terror on each of the kids faces as they run away from the explosion. Kim Phuc in the middle looks as if she is burning alive and in excruciating pain.

This photo was taken of a vulture eying down a Sudanese child who is extremely malnourished for prey. This photo shows the vulture waiting to feed on a dying toddler in Sudan. This photo was taken and published to the world to show the famine in third-world countries. The photographer Kevin Carter's struggles were highlighted and within three months of recognition for it, he committed suicide. This photo allows people in first-world countries to care for those in poverty and those less fortunate than those who are fortunate. This picture is very graphical as it shows the world that kids in some countries don't even make it to adolescence.

This is a photograph of the proof of how the United States army torturing people from Iraq at the Abu Ghraib prison. These pictures were exposed in 2004 showing the US soldiers humiliating and abusing the Iraqi people. The corruption of the United States Army soldiers was released to the public and showed everybody how the Iraqi people, who some were not apart of the Taliban, were treated by the US soldiers.

SharkWater Questions

1. The film Shark Water responds to complex problems occurring in our society by exposing the uncontrollable shark-hunting industry who are driving sharks to extinction. Rob Stewart explores the densest shark populations in the world. The shark-hunters go after the shark-fins and usually throw the rest of the sharks body back into the ocean leaving a gruesome mess. Rob Stewart and his crew confront shark poachers and amongst their experiences are boat chases with poachers and police, boat ramming, hidden camera footage of massive shark fining facilities, corrupt court systems and eventually attempted murder charges which made Rob have to flee. Rob has discovered that sharks have gone from predator to prey and sharks are very important for preventing over-consumption of plankton by other fish which moderate global warming. The extinction of sharks is creating unsustainable fishery. Within a few years the sharks will be gone and the over-consumption of plankton begins raising global warming.

2. Rob Stewart makes a very important impact in this film. He tried his very hardest to put himself in between the shark poachers and himself cause a lot of fights and noticed corruption. Rob directed, produced, and narrated this film and even during the film you can tell how passionate he is about sharks. This film had won eight major awards and had been nominated three times. Rob wants to stop the shark-hunting as it is leading the sharks to extinction. He proves that 100 million sharks every year are killed for their fins. A sharks fin can retail from $300 to more, making it a billion dollar industry. Shark-hunting is also illegal, so why do the do it anyway?! Rob Stewart is trying to put a stop to it with or without a fight.

3. This film gave me lots of knowledge on the shark-fining industry and how corrupt it is. I believe in what Rob Stewart is fighting for and I believe all living creatures should be treated humanely. During the documentary Rob shows the treatment of the sharks by the poachers and how horrifying it actually can be. This film helped me make one important informed decision, shark fining must stop.

4. Of course I would consider making a documentary as a career. If I had a theory or a problem that I wanted the people to be aware about, I would create a documentary so that I could elaborate my thoughts, opinions, and findings to whoever was willing to listen. He used video camera's, secret video cameras, tape recorders, scuba diving gear, etc. He also did a lot of interviews with shows such as Good Morning Arizona, Larry King Live, CNN, MTV, the Today Show, and many more to get his thoughts across to the people.

Google Glass

Google has developed a wearable computer with a head-mounted display. Google Glass will display information similar to a smartphone but will have a hands-free format. To interact with your Google Glass you use voice commands in any chosen language to operate around your information, web, mail, etc. The glasses currently do not have fitted frames and the company is considering a partnership with RayBan and open retail stores so that customers can try on the device. Google Glass will eventually work with frames and lenses that match the wearers prescription. Glass is being developed by Google X Lab which has worked on other futuristic devices such as driver-less cars. Google Glass is definitely going to change the age of technology.

A Documentary I Would Create!

In all my viewings of documentaries I have noticed I have a stronger appeal towards those with mysterious revelations and that takes the viewer on the journalists expedition with him. If I were to create a documentary I would definitely do it on something very exciting and controversial to the public and make sure I show my proof by actually going around to different places. A lot of documentaries these days that have caught the majority of the public's eye are based are corruption in the government, terrorism, and Illuminai/New World Order concepts. Now a lot of theories could be false and a lot of theories could be true, but differentiating between true and false is what everyone struggles on doing. The type of documentary that I would create would show me finding proof and logical answers for certain questions of conspiracy. For example, in my previous blog, I talk about the documentary "Inside Secret Government Warehouses: Shocking Revelations", and one thing I liked was how at the start of the documentary they go over every single point and thing that they will be covering and showing you real life proof on the rest of the documentary. They also have a journalist in charge of the expedition so as a viewer you are watching him travel the globe unveiling the worlds top secrets. That is how I would do my own documentary as well.

Inside Secret Government Warehouses: Shocking Revelations

In, Inside Secret Government Warehouses: Shocking Revelations, journalist Lester Holt goes on a a global expedition to uncover the truth behind the worlds top secrets, mysterious warehouses where super-classified objects are kept.
Holt capitalizes on exclusive access to restricted sites, traveling from Area 51 in Nevada to dip inside the Vatican secret archives, the centerpiece of Dan Brown’s book, Angels and Demons, and interviewing informants like Washington decision-makers, former top military personnel and leading experts.
Amongst his findings he meets a high-level informant who describes huge underground tunnels beneath military installations, victims of unauthorized government experimentation, and a former US Air Force pilot ordered to shoot down a UFO in England. With input from world renowned theoretical physicists, Vatican officials, anthropologists and experts on Area 51, Holt will explore the darkest corners of the places where the world’s secrets hide.

Shazam iPhone App

Shazam is an iPhone application that allows you to instantly receive the information on a specific song. The user listening to a song that he/she does not know the name of would put on Shazam, and within a matter of seconds, the name and artist of the song will pop up on the screen. It will give you options of purchasing that song and it will also save that song into your history for later. People use Shazam to build up a playlist of heard songs so that they can go home and download the list before them. Shazam also allows each song in your history to have a 30 second preview allowing you to review your song if you had forgotten it. In my opinion Shazam is a great iPhone app, it has come in handy for me and downloading song I am not sure the names of. I will say Shazam does not know every single song in the world as song artist are a lot more underground than others but its doing a good enough job to identify a large amount of songs, and I believe their only going to update more and more into it. I rate Shazam a 4 out of 5 stars.

Evernote iPhone App

Evernote is a very easy to use application that helps you remember and take down anything from ideas to notes or saved documents. Evernote acts as a word processor on the iPhone itself. With your Evernote account you can sign in onto your computer or other Apple devices and have all your work or documents at your fingertips. On Evernote you are able to take a picture of a document in real life and immediately turn that picture of your document into a document on Evernote. Evernote also allows you to record voice and audio notes and store them for future preference. This program allows iPhone users to stay organized by having all their work accessible to them at all times. In my opinion I believe Evernote is a must have app for those still in school or being taught something, or even those with full-time/part-time jobs. I would rate Evernote a 5 stars out of 5 as you can never go wrong with being organized.
